Katie Lessard’s Story from WMUR

CONCORD, N.H. — For her 7th birthday, Katie Lessard, of Bow, decided that other children needed gifts more than she did.

With help from her mother, Katie put out the word that her birthday was going to be a little different this year.

“They needed winter coats,” she said. “I wear mine every day to school. It’s chilly when they go outside.”

Her mother, Daphne Lessard, said that for Katie’s birthday party, they told people to bring coats to donate to other children.

“We had just asked people to bring a coat,” she said. “We got bags and bags of things. The response was great. A lot of folks said they hope this becomes a trend.”

The effort collected 16 bags of donated items, including quilts, stuffed animals, hats and mittens.

Katie’s gifts will be shared with 16 children living at the Friends Shelter in Concord and others who have recently moved out.

“I couldn’t be prouder of Katie, and I think she’s proud of herself,” Lessard said. “I am.

“The warm clothing drive Katie donated to is called Warmth From the Millyard, and it’s run by the University of New Hampshire Manchester.
